Arturito & La Máquina del Sabor has been bringing live Latin music to weddings in Barcelona, the Maresme coast, the Penedès wine region, the Costa Brava and all of Catalonia since 2000. Duo or trio for the aperitif, quintet or septet for the party and, for big weddings, the full nine-piece band. We learn your song and host in English, Spanish and Catalan.

When does a salsa band work best at a wedding?

A salsa band works best during the cocktail hour, with an intimate line-up, and for the party after dinner, with a full line-up; during dinner we recommend background music or none at all.

The question couples ask most is whether they can have the band all day. You can, but it is not always wise: a ceremony calls for two musicians and a bolero, a cocktail hour calls for a trio that sounds good without drowning conversation, and the party calls for percussion and horns. So we usually propose two line-ups at the same wedding: trio for the cocktails and quintet or septet for the party, with the same musicians scaled up, which costs less than two separate bands.

We leave dinner alone. In our experience guests want to talk, and a salsa orchestra during the main course gets in the way. If you want something, a piano-and-voice duo with soft boleros between courses works, and we stop before the cake so the start of the party has impact.

Which line-up for a wedding of 80, 150 or 300 guests?

For weddings up to 100 guests we recommend the quintet; from 100 to 200, the septet; and for weddings of more than 200 guests outdoors, the full nine-piece band. The cocktail hour is always covered by a duo or trio.

A farmhouse in the Vallès with 120 guests in the garden and an estate in the Penedès with 300 people under a marquee do not call for the same band. In between, the septet is the line-up that plays most weddings with us: it has horns, it has percussion and it fits almost any space. We also look at who your guests are: if there is Cuban, Colombian, Dominican or Venezuelan family, the full band is appreciated; if most guests do not dance salsa, a quintet mixing merengue, bachata, cumbia and Latin pop is more effective. Compare the five line-ups and we will help you decide.

As Arturito says, "at a wedding the most important song is not the first dance, it is the second one: the one that decides whether the floor fills or empties."

How do you coordinate with the venue?

We speak directly with the venue manager to coordinate set-up times, space, power and volume, so the couple never has to act as go-between. We know most wedding venues around Barcelona, the Maresme, the Vallès and the Penedès.

The 4 steps: 1) tell us the date, venue, guest count and which moments you want live music for; 2) we send a quote with the recommended line-ups within 48 hours; 3) you sign the contract and secure the date with a deposit; 4) a month before we confirm your special song, timings and speak with the venue. On the day we arrive ninety minutes to two hours early, set up quietly and sound-check before guests arrive. Write to us from the contact page with your date and venue.

FAQ

Questions couples ask before booking

How much does a salsa band cost for a wedding in Barcelona?

It depends on the line-up and hours: a duo for the cocktail hour costs far less than a septet for the party, and the full nine-piece band starts at €2,500 in Barcelona. We send a closed quote with the recommended line-ups for your wedding within 48 hours. No travel surcharge in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.

Can you play our first-dance song?

Yes. We learn your first-dance song and up to two or three more special requests if you tell us a month in advance. If the song is not Latin, we can arrange it as a bolero, cha-cha-chá or soft salsa, or play it close to the original if you prefer.

Do you host in English?

Yes, we host in English, Spanish or Catalan depending on your guests, and mix languages for international crowds. The Latin repertoire works especially well for guests who do not speak Spanish: the music is danced the same way.

Do you bring a sound system?

Yes, we bring our own PA for weddings of up to around 250 guests, including a wireless microphone for speeches. In venues with a sound limiter we adapt the volume; for very large spaces we coordinate with the venue's technical supplier.

How long do you play at a wedding?

Typically one hour of cocktail music with a duo or trio and two 45-minute dance sets with the larger line-up, with a short break between them. Extra sets can be added, and after the last set we can leave a playlist running on our system.

How far in advance do couples book?

Saturday weddings from May to October are booked six to twelve months ahead. Weekday or off-season weddings usually need two to three months. If your date is close, ask anyway: sometimes there is availability.
